Aims of this course

Who is the course designed for?

This course is designed for anyone who wishes to make better use of MapInfo Professional whatever their working environment. Whether you are completely new, self taught or have some experience with MapInfo Professional this course will give you clear guidance to the key questions that you need to answer to benefit from using the software.

What can you learn from this course?

Through many examples, advice, tips, methods and exercises you will learn how to avoid some of the common pitfalls and make best use of MapInfo Professional in a language which is clear and available to everyone.

Pre-requisites

The pre-requisites necessary to make best use of MapInfo Professional are as follows:-
  • A good understanding of the Windows interface and Internet Explorer ( file handling, directory creation).
  • Ability to work with spreadsheet tables such as in Excel, for example.

Understanding databases such as Access for example would be advantageous. The familiarity with any software using layers and vector design such as AutoCAD or the use any form of GIS would also be helpful.
MapInfo Professional is a complete software solution, covering a wide range of applications with which you can address many different requirements according to your work and needs. Whatever your needs, be it database management, cartography, geography, statistics or vector drawing MapInfo Professional can meet your objectives.

The training method of this course

This training course is based on the experiences of trainers and consultants in the GIS field. Their experiences ensure that this course gives you a good grounding in all aspects of MapInfo Professional functionality. The course takes you step by step through an explanation of all the features of MapInfo Professional with many examples and exercises based on practical experience.

Course program

The course is made up of a series of sessions which include both theory and practice.

During the early sessions you will work with files already prepared. It is necessary initially, to learn about MapInfo Professional without becoming too concerned about database management. At this stage it is important to cover the basics, that is the essential concepts that you must absolutely master to work efficiently with the software. These are the fundamentals that self taught users often lack and could benefit from. In these sessions you will gain an understanding of the principal functionality from the initial maps which have already been prepared to show how layer control, thematic analysis and labelling, work.

Next we will look at attribute data and how you can select data both from the map and from the relevant tables attached to the map.

Then we will look at the creation and printing of maps and show how you can create meaningful maps and distribute them.

Next we will cover the management and creation of tables within MapInfo Professional. We will examine two different examples one concerning statistical analysis, geomarketing) and another regarding territory management.

We also cover the following subjects:

Modifying tables, management of tables and the use of Excel and Access tables.
