Face to face GIS training courses v on-line alternatives

There are many different ways to acquire the GIS training knowledge you need to achieve your objectives. Besides face to face or on-line training courses you can learn about GIS from books, or from on-line articles and videos. Whatever the method you choose will depend on a number of other variables including cost, time and need.
For instance, if your company requires you to learn a specific GIS software program in order to complete a project, then it should be up to your organisation to provide all the necessary tools to enable you to be successful. However, many organisations assume that software is self explanatory these days and all you need to do is to spend an hour or two with someone else who has used the software in order to become proficient. This unfortunately doesn't work with most modern desktop GIS systems unless your requirements are limited to looking at maps and printing what you see on screen.

The main desktop software suppliers ESRI (ArcGIS), Pitney Bowes(MapInfo) and Quantum GIS have many resources on-line which can be easily accessed to help in the task of learning about GIS software functionality. However, if you have a specific problem to solve and limited time scales to achieve it you may decide to take either an on-line course or an intensive one or two day course from a GIS trainer.

On-line courses are now very sophisticated and can be interactive. These types of courses may answer your requirements especially  if you are not able to find a suitable training course within easy travel distance from your location. Both on-line and on-site have advantages and disadvantages which could be the subject for another day. As previously mentioned I do not believe that there is a specific solution which meets everyone's needs. In the final analysis your specific criteria will dictate what will be the best solution to your requirements.
